ALEXANDRIA CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS FOR FEBRUARY 7, 2012

The Alexandria, Louisiana City Council met on Tuesday February 7, 2012.

As is becoming more prevalent recently, Council President, Harry Silver, who is 90 years old, suffered another forgetful moment when he referred to Councilman Chuck Fowler as City Attorney Chuck Johnson. Harry's age puts him 20 years past the mandatory retirement age for our judges.

A and E SELECTION COMMITTEE

This committee chose the architectural firm to handle up to $1 million in repairs to the Alexander Fulton Hotel for an additional cost to the City of 7%. ("MAYOR AND THE ALEXANDRIA CITY COUNCIL THROW MORE MONEY DOWN THE FULTON HOTEL TOILET").

FINANCE and LEGAL AFFAIRS

An appointment was made to hire Payne, Moore and Herrington, LLP, Certified Public Accountants, as our City's auditors for the upcoming year at the same price. It was with great sadness that we learned of the retirement of Ernest Sasser, but henceforth the audit would be conducted by James Ballard, a partner in that firm.

City Attorney Chuck Johnson was also approved to seek an Attorney General's opinion on the new smoking ban's application to the Nursing Home Patient Bill of Rights. This is being sought even though this opinion could mean nothing, the clear and easy to understand statute would negate the ban as far as nursing homes, and Alexandria is the first City in the state to have such a far reaching smoking ban. I think that this is a silly waste of time. ("ALEXANDRIA CITY COUNCIL AGENDAS FOR 1\24\2012").

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The three lawyers for the City, Chuck Johnson, Trey Gist and Kay Michiels, explained, and correctly, the procedures and law that the City faces on dealing with dilapidated and abandoned buildings, loitering and trash. ("DILAPIDATED & ABANDONED HOUSES AND BUILDINGS IN ALEXANDRIA").

See the U.S. Supreme Court's 1983 decision in Mennonite Bd. of Missions v. Adams, 462 U.S. 791 (1983).
