MORE ON THE MLK, JR. DAY VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE

This is some more from local talk radio about the Martin Luther King Day ill-fated voter registration drive in Alexandria. Louisiana. See yesterday's post entitled "VOTER REGISTRATION STOPPED BY ALEXANDRIA AT THE MLK, JR. CELEBRATION" for the first part of this discussion.

I incorrectly reported yesterday that the Dr. King ceremonies were held at Convention Hall when they were in fact held at the Riverfront Center.

You can hear on the Tony Brown Eyes Open sound clip (below) Rev. Larry (Love) Turner, a friend and supporter of Alexandria Mayor Jacques Roy's and during the last mayoral election whose church was attended by Jacques, give his explanation of who Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority was told that it would have to pay a fee in order to have its annual voter registration at the celebration. That was even so with the sponsoring ministerial alliance and the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club not having to pay any fee for the use of the Riverfront Center to its owner, the City of Alexandria, Louisiana. Rev. Turner's explanation was disputed by the two woman that called into Tony's show who were parties to the conversation with Rev.Turner.

Rev. Turner said that Alexandria City Attorney Chuck Johnson had told him that no political organizations could operate a voter registration on City property.

What Chuck was talking about is that the City of Alexandria requires a I.R.S. 501(c)(3) tax exemption for the waiver of a fee for the use of City buildings. But that doesn't explain why the sorority was allowed to register voters at all previous King celebrations free from any fees. Besides that, Alpha Kappa Alpha does have a 501(c)(3) tax exemption. That tax exemption is explained in the post "FREDDY IS ALL WRONG ON THE TAX EXEMPT STATUS OF CEREBRAL PALSY OF LOUISIANA". (See also: "Guide to NonPartisan Voter Registration").

It is up to the I.R.S. to decide who is tax exempt, not the City of Alexandria. According to Tony, Chuck should also have been familiar with the sorority's voter registration programs because he belongs to the Alpha Psi Alpha fraternity, which is the brother organization to the Alpha Kappa Alpha's.

Next, you can hear that same discussion which was had on KSYL radio's Talk Back Pre-Show this morning. You can also hear co-host, Fred Rosenfeld. try his best to take up for Mayor Roy and the City.
