ALEXANDRIA CITY COUNCIL AGENDAS FOR 1\24\2012

The Alexandria City Council agendas for next week are:

&

Of interest on the 3:00 p.m. Finance and Legal Affairs Committee is that it will consider a resolution ratifying and acknowledging all official acts of newly appointed District 3 Councilman Jerry Jones since his date of appointment on December 13, 2011.

As you will recall, this item was pulled from the consent calendar at the last meeting due to several people wishing to speak on it. I have also heard that some of the Council have sought some guidance in this from the Louisiana Secretary of State's office. (See also: "ALEXANDRIA CITY COUNCIL MEETING FOR JANUARY 10, 2012" and "ALEXANDRIA CITY COUNCIL AGENDA FOR 1-10-2012").

Also coming up in the full council will be for it to authorize the City Attorney, Chuck Johnson, to seek an Attorney General's opinion on Alexandria's new smoking ban (Ordinance #148-2011) and its relation to the Nursing Home Residents' Bill of Rights.

LSA- R.S. 40:2010.8 is subpart (19) clearly states that "The right to use tobacco at his own expense under the home's safety rules and under applicable laws and rules of the state, unless the facility's written policies preclude smoking in patient rooms." What is there to ask the Attorney General for his opinion? Can Chuck not read? Can Chuck and his non-busy legal staff not look up cases? An Attorney General's opinion is worth no more than the thousands of other attorneys in Louisiana. It is the courts that will ultimately decide the issue.

I also see that the Council will decide if we should throw more of out tax dollars down the money pit that is known as the Alexander Fulton Hotel for roof repairs.
