There are two ways to look at John McCain's suspension of his campaign, so that Congress can attempt to settle Pres. Bush's financial bailout plan. One is that he is a good leader responding to a crisis. The second way to look at it is that he desires to delay the debate Friday to better prepare and is simply political grandstanding.
I believe that the true reason is that he desires to do his job, that he is being paid for, and be present to vote on the bailout plan, which is a national crisis. I believe that reason because McCain has also suspended collecting campaign contributions during this time. Additionally, he does not desire to cancel Friday's debate, he just wants to postpone it.
