Baltimore, Maryland high school art teacher, Jolita Berry, left, was attacked and beaten by a female student. While classmates cheered on the female student, one student captured the video on a cell phone and published it on the Internet. (See: "City art teacher beaten by female student").
The female 10th grade student at Reginald Lewis High School, who Berry ordered to sit down. "The student did not obey, coming closer to confront the teacher. "She said she's gonna bang me," Berry said. "I said, 'Back up, you're in my space. If you hit me, I'm gonna defend myself.'" id. See the video report below:
The most amazing thing is that the principal told Berry that the attack was her fault, for telling the student that she would defend herself. (NBC's "Today Show" 3/10/08). Marietta English, president of the union's teacher chapter, said that her office has been receiving "two or three complaints a day of assaults on teachers, many of which are not reported to the school system or police. The system says it has expelled students for assaults on staff 112 times this school year, compared with 98 at this time last year." (Baltimore Sun article supra.).
Coming closely on the heels of the 8 teens who beat the cheerleader in Florida, and also posted the video to the Internet (see the link below), one cannot help but wonder of technology is making idiots out of kids. Who but an idiot would attack someone while being videotaped? Oh, I forgot, cops do!
